I frequently mix together my own spice blends depending on the season. Sometimes you want different spices and herbs to stand out in your recipes, and sometimes you just want a nice blend of Italian spice, taco spice, lemon pepper fish spice, or whatever it might be!

And these are just great to mix together in little jars, tie with a ribbon, and gift to your friends in celebration of the season! Which is what we’re doing around here. I save little garlic and relish jars throughout the year just to hold the little spice blends I make for myself and for friends. Strip the labels, paint the lid a nice solid, plaid, or buffalo check combo, and you have a beautiful homemade gift for the season {anyone want to see a how-to on the jars?}.

The beautiful thing about spice blends is that they kind of marinate over time, and the different spices play off each other and blend into each other as you let them sit. It makes for a really fun and nuanced flavor in all the dishes you add it to.

Since it’s fall, let’s pay homage to the beautiful spice blend that showcases itself in pumpkin spice – and in all those PSLs you see people carrying on about. But you know what? Mix up this blend and put about a teaspoon worth in the grounds of your coffee maker, or mix it in with the grounds of your French press, and you have a deliciously seasonally flavored coffee.

Bonus? Cinnamon is extremely heart healthy. Cinnamon helps your body maintain antioxidants after a fatty meal, helps reduce blood sugar levels, and as a bonus, improves attention scores. So maybe that PSL of yours helps you out after all.

I’ll be using this deliciousness later this month in my pumpkin pie, of course, but also in my maple cinnamon latte that I’m really excited to share, in pumpkin spice muffins, and in a lot of other recipes! And, of course, giving a few jars away to friends!

Happy Fall, y’all!
