Quick, easy, tasty, refreshing, packed with all the great vitamins and nutrients you need, and filling enough to kick off your day with energy! This is the green smoothie even for the people out there who aren’t green smoothie people!
I make a lot of smoothies in my house, but I’ve never been much of a green smoothie person. My smoothies tend to be tropical and citrusy, and I’ve been more likely to find a way to get peanut butter and chocolate into them rather than anything green and vitamin packed {it’s still a smoothie and not a milkshake if there’s banana in it, right?}.

But lately, I’ve been doing a good job of listening to what my body needs – not cravings, because then I think I would exist completely on these bad boys, but what my body is telling me it needs – whole grains, lean protein, fish, and lots of produce. And with fresh produce coming back to the stores and filling our garden right now, I have a lot to choose from.
So I’ve been packing our meal plans with salads. Lots of big leafy healthy salads. Lots of side veggies. But all the smoothies I blend for after my morning workout made me think about trying something else, something I’ve honestly avoided because I haven’t been sure how to make one that I will actually like: a green smoothie.
Lots of my fellow bloggers have shared their options for healthy green smoothies and juices and while I’ve tried some of these, they just haven’t hit the right spot.
So I started thinking about flavor combinations in my favorite smoothies. And I started thinking about the flavor combinations in my favorite salads. A green smoothie is, essentially, a salad in a glass, with the addition of some dairy, protein, and ice. And I started thinking about something that, if I had it after a workout, would keep me full through the morning – because these are for the mornings where I have to go straight to meetings and probably won’t be able to get a break until 10 or 11 or even lunch.
After a little bit of experimenting, the Tropical Green Smoothie was born.
Just look at all that deliciousness layered together. Fresh cut pineapple, frozen mango chunks, avocado, ginger, and two heaping cups of fresh spinach! Add in some milk, Greek yogurt, and ice cubes and blend, and you’ve got an awesome, hearty, and super nutrient packed smoothie!
You can even freeze your smoothie until it’s about the consistency of soft serve and layer it under more avocado chunks, berries, seeds, and granola for an awesome smoothie bowl.

I’ve gotta tell you, I wasn’t expecting to like these nearly this much. The first time I made them, I tasted them and was blown away by how good they were. Good enough to take one to Scott for him to try, even though he’s definitely not a green smoothie person. And good enough for him to drain that glass.
