Smoothies + Juices

Very Berry Smoothies

Smoothies are a fantastic way to start your day. Bright, fresh, packed with vitamins, and extremely easy to make {seriously, you just pop the ingredients in your blender and go!}, you should always have a couple go-to smoothie recipes at your disposal. Let this be one of them!

So many of you liked my California Dream Smoothies last month that I thought I’d share another one of our favorites with you – the Very Berry Smoothie.

As I mentioned then, I love making smoothies, especially in the winter months. There’s just something about a whole bunch of fresh fruit in the morning, even when it’s dark and gray outside, to perk you right up. And who doesn’t love a meal where you can just throw everything in a blender and be done with it?

Like so.

Lock it in, let it rip, and you’ve got ready to go energy!

As with my other smoothie recipes, I don’t add any sugar. There’s more than enough natural sugar in the fruit to make it sweet, but it doesn’t hurt to add a tablespoon of honey or agave to the mix if you like things a little sweeter.

You can use just about any combo of berries you like and make a delicious smoothie, but my favorites are strawberries and blackberries.

Mostly for the taste, but when you break it down nutritionally, strawberries are high manganese, and also provide a nice amount of folate and potassium, and both strawberries and blackberries are high in vitamin C and are great antioxidants. Then you get the potassium from the bananas and calcium from the milk and yogurt, and you’ve got a great start on your daily vitamins and minerals.

As a bonus, they blend into this absolutely gorgeous hue.

Because you need a burst of color with all this winter gray going on.

Some smoothie makers out there prefer to use frozen fruit for their smoothies. While frozen fruit works just fine, I like having the tartness of the fresh juice in there and being able to slice up a couple as garnish. It’s worth splurging a little more at the grocery store.

So here you go – tasty health in a cup! You can double the recipe without changing it up all that much if you want to have larger servings, but you may only need one and a half times the honey, depending on how sweet you want your smoothie.

What other smoothies should we share? Mango-pineapple? Peach? Dare we go green?

  1. Looks tasty…

I always have liked fruit, especially berries. I haven’t tried a smoothie yet but I would love to make homemade apple juice one day.

    1. We use our juicer to make apple cider fresh from apples we pick in the fall. You should try that with the apples from the tree in your front yard!
