So what is the purpose of Home Front Cooking, you might ask? Well, let’s paint a picture of post pandemic working life for those of us who spend most of our working hours at home.
We. Are. Busy.
There’s no getting around that. If we’re not scrambling to do our work around what feels like a thousand meetings, we’re trying to help our family do the same. Being a working parent was hard before Covid-19, and with the closure or move online of so many schools, now we’re managing the often interrupted routine of a little person between meetings and calls. Which means we can probably manage to do work, make sure potty times happen, and probably not much else during the average work day.
Which leaves exactly what time available for eating healthy and taking time for fitness and wellness? About zero. And these have become especially important now that we’re not walking much farther than from our coffee machines to our home offices, sometimes our kitchen tables, in this work from home environment.
So how do we make time for healthy food and fitness?
That’s where this little blog comes in. I’m a big proponent of remote work, telework, and distributed teams, and one of my responsibilities in my day job is to figure out how to make remote work really work for my organization {which just happens to be the U.S. Army}.
And I’m also a fairly experienced home cook and fitness enthusiast…who just happened to gain a fair bit of weight between pregnancy and quarantine.
I’ve managed to shed a lot of it, but I’m still working on it, which I think puts me in a great position to explore options, to bring in friends who are experts to interview, and to experiment with new programs that will help us all figure out how to navigate not just the work-life balance struggles that come with working from home, but the work-life-fitness-wellness struggles!
So how do we do this?
The philosophy around here is simple.
#1. We make it easy.
Seriously, that’s the biggest part of this. Just creating simple and quick routines we can follow, whether it’s in the kitchen or finding ways to get a little exercise in. Recipes and fitness routines don’t have to be complicated to be successful, and the shorter they are, the more chance we have of actually making them fit in our busy lives.
#2. We make it consistent.
If you’re looking for any kind of significant change to happen, you’ve got to make it a habit. That means that the best kind of program for you to take on is the one you stick with. Reduce your decision fatigue by picking nutritional meals you’ll actually eat and exercise routines you’ll actually do. Again, these are quick and easy things you can fit into your busy routine.
#3. We make it creative.
Mixing up your workout routine and your recipes makes doing healthy things seem like way less of a chore. And keeping your body guessing is a good way to get it to burn more energy and build more strength! We’re here to provide some options for you when you’re tired of the same old thing and want to work some new tastes and routines into your busy day.
Let me tell you right now that I’m not an expert in these fields. If you’re having difficulty getting a nutrition or fitness program off the ground, I highly recommend talking to your doctor, a certified nutritionist, or a certified coach.
My goal is just to share tips and tricks for everyday improvement and help you navigate some of the fitness and wellness challenges we experience while working from home, and hopefully to learn from you as well.
Thanks for joining me on this journey!
