Motherhood :: Month 8

Marcus School Pictures 02Just stop, you guys. How cute is this kid? This mama’s heart is about to explode.

My little man got his first pictures taken at Baby School (a.k.a. daycare) and this is probably just the first of many purchases I will make from LifeTouch. I remember them coming to my school and suffering through a host of different indignities and backgrounds. But they managed to take some super cute pictures of my kid. It might be enough to make me forgive them the super 80’s laser backdrop.

Maybe.

I’m just so grateful that I never figured out how to do 80’s pinwheel bangs and that my hair never had enough staying power to be 80’s big. Otherwise, those pictures would have been so awkward.

Enough about me. Let’s talk about this ridiculously cute kid.

He’s 8 months old now, and full of life and joy and energy and exuberance and curiosity. I love watching him explore his little world, which he does frequently by spinning around on his belly and rolling to wherever he wants to go. He’s still all about crawling, but why crawl when you can just tuck in your little arms and roll?

For me, this has been a fun month of teaching him how to get after all the things he’s trying to investigate. I love being able to hand him a toy or a block or a piece of food and helping him to understand what it is. I’m the ultimate tour guide, introducing my son to the world, one little piece at a time.

So there’s a huge amount of responsibility in that. And lots of fear and trepidation.

Parenting is definitely not for the faint of heart. You feel a constant pull between excitement about the world you’re helping your tiny human explore, and terror that you’re not doing it right or explaining to them all the pitfalls and perils they might face, or any number of other things that only a parent would worry about.

You worry and you doubt. A lot.

And your kid doubts you on occasion, too. As in, “Mama, why is this strange camera pointed at me?”

Even confused, he’s still adorable.

But after having been at this motherhood thing for 8 months, suffering through the growth of four teeth (two top and two bottom), the crawling and trying to crawl, the constant hunger that comes from a very quickly growing little boy (30 inches and 21 pounds now, you guys!), and trying to figure out how to get past a very finicky gag reflex (if there’s any texture in his food or any lumps he wasn’t expecting, watch out), I’m learning that we just have no clue what we’re doing. I don’t think any parent has a clue what they’re doing.

And it absolutely takes a village to help you out.

I’m grateful beyond belief to our daycare team, to our friends, to our family, to my coworkers and my boss, to all the folks who reach out with help or advice or a toy or a pacifier when one is desperately needed, and to everyone who cuts us slack as new parents of a new little person who is still trying to figure out the world.

And really grateful to the LifeTouch folks who captured this little smile. Totally worth the money. And there wasn’t even a laser backdrop this time.
