Brown Sugar Snickerdoodles

I received a copious amount of brown sugar from Dixie Crystals as part of the Third Annual Good Cookies Food Bloggers’ Valentine’s Event. The decision to craft a recipe around their generous gift, however, was my own.

It’s a terrific day to talk about dessert! Wait – isn’t every day a good day to talk about dessert? Sure, but today’s extra special. Because it’s the Third Annual Good Cookies Food Bloggers’ Valentine’s Event, where dozens of us food blogger types are baking, sharing, and raising money in support of Cookies for Kids’ Cancer! Here’s a quick message from the organizers!

Help us make a difference by donating to Cookies for Kids’ Cancer! Our goal is to raise at least $3000. Because these three companies: Dixie Crystals, Mediavine and OXO have each pledged to match our donations raised through this campaign up to $3000!

Update: Thanks to many of you, we have reached our goal. You can still donate and help us make an even bigger difference!

Also, Baked with Love t-shirts and tote bags are on sale in Julie’s shop. You can preorder this week only! All proceeds of Baked with Love product sales will be donated to Cookies for Kids’ Cancer!

The main goal of this effort is to raise awareness of childhood cancers and to raise desperately needed funds for additional research and to help families in need. You can find the rest of the group at the link above or by following #helpingcookies on Facebook and Twitter.

I’ve been baking for Cookies for Kids’ Cancer for a number of years, back when there used to be a big food blogger cookie exchange. It was a sad, sad day when the bloggers hosting the exchange decided not to continue it. So I was absolutely overjoyed to see Julie of The Little Kitchen pick it up and run with it. She’s put together some great bloggers and some great sponsors. So without further ado, let me share my contribution to the mix.

Snickerdoodles are one of Scott’s favorite cookies, and he recently asked me if I would whip some up for him. I’m always up for that, but I decided to put a little twist on these cookies. Because of the generosity of Dixie Crystals, one of the sponsors of the Third Annual Good Cookies Food Bloggers’ Valentine’s Event, I’ve been supplied with enough brown sugar to make me a very happy baker for some time – so I decided to use it in these Snickerdoodles.

The result is a delicious Snickerdoodle cookie that’s just a little more lip-smackingly sweet than usual. And not in a cloying sugar way, but in that deep dark rich molassesy taste you get from brown sugar.

Hope you enjoy!

Brown Sugar Snickerdoodles

Makes about 2 dozen cookies.

What You’ll Need:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar + 1/2 cup brown sugar {yes, divided}
  • 2 eggs
  • 4-6 tbsp ground cinnamon

How to Make Them:

1. Preheat your oven to 375F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside for now.

3. Using your stand mixer with paddle attachment, beat the butter until it’s creamy and fluffy. Add 1 cup of sugar and 1/2 cup brown sugar and beat again until light and fluffy. Add the eggs and again, beat until fluffy.

4. Gradually add the flour mixture and beat until well combined {I typically add about a cup at a time}.

5. Mix together the ground cinnamon and 1/2 cup of brown sugar on a rimmed plate.

6. Roll the dough into about 1-inch diameter balls. Roll the balls of dough in the cinnamon and brown sugar mix until nicely coated. Drop onto the parchment paper lined baking sheet and press flat with your hand.

7. Bake 10 minutes at 375F or until the edges of the cookie are golden brown.

Looking forward to hearing what you guys think of these delicious bars – and please do go check up the rest of the Good Cookie Food Bloggers’ Valentine’s Day Event line-up! There are some amazing recipes in there, and please think about donating if you can!
