Hey there, friends – happy February!

I probably don’t need to tell you that this first twelfth of the year we’ve worked ourselves through is cold! And while I spent a couple afternoons sitting by the fire cuddling with my son and watching the snow fall all around us and really enjoying winter, that snow was followed immediately by a ridiculous single-digit cold snap. And in other parts of the country, we saw unbelievable temperatures like -50 pop up. -50. Negative. Fifty. Just NO.

Although if Virginia wants to give us some more snow days, little man and I are on board. I just ordered him some 12-18 month sized bunting {yes, this is for my super tall 6 month old!} and we’re ready to get out and play! As long as we can come in, get warm, and sip some hot chocolate and warm milk respectively when we get back inside!

All this indoor time we’ve had due to the cold, though, has stoked the recipe creativity. We’ve spent some fun afternoons with me in the kitchen, whipping up fun recipes, while Scott and Marcus play together by the fireplace and sample the things I bring them. We’ve got a recipe of Scott’s to feature this month, too! We’re looking forward to sharing his Grilled Steak with Peanut Sauce, along with my Lobster Bisque, super easy chili, Corn and Blue Crab Chowder, and a lot of baking! We’re also featuring a snippet from our last trip to London as this month’s entry into my Food Exploring series, and I’m excited to see what you think!

In the meantime, here’s what else is going on around here…


Cooking… Last month, I cooked up a lot of breakfast! Sour Cream Pancakes, Bacon + Eggs Breakfast Pizza, Cajun Eggs Benedict, and Cranberry Orange Scones. There’s nothing like a hot breakfast when it’s cold outside! We also paid tribute to wonderful healthy carrots in my Creamy Carrot Soup and Carrot Cake Cupcakes. My Maple Balsamic Pork Chops rounded out the month. This month, we’ve got plenty of soups and stews and comfort food, mixed in with some sweet cookie treats and the easiest and best bread I know how to make!

Building… Nothing too exciting this month. We finished up trimming the stairs and I’ve started a personal mission to go through the house and make sure all the walls are painted with something better than the super flat garbage paint the house came wearing. Seriously, the stuff is awful – brush against the wall and it leaves a mark. I’m hoping we get a chance to build some pantry shelves and get after organizing the pantry, though!

Exploring… I made it out to the 1789 Restaurant with a bunch of girlfriends during D.C. Restaurant Week, and it was pretty damn fabulous. And yeah, I think that was my only adventure out this month! Between the cold, a big work conference, and, well, the cold, we haven’t ventured out all that much. I’m hoping we can get out a little bit as a family this month, and maybe take little man on a hike or two, now that he’s big enough to get in a hiking backpack. So we might be exploring REI for said backpack.

Reading… I was looking for something fluffy and fantastic to read on the train into work, and someone recommended Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments series. Short version – it’s not my thing. I can’t stand the main characters and all their drama. The secondary characters have great stories but they’re marginalized, the world is compelling but unexplored, and some of the plot twists, if allowed to play out and not saves immediately by some magical cure, could have been incredibly dark and fun. But it’s just a pile of wasted potential. A beautiful cupcake you expect to be rich and full of dark chocolate and salted caramel but tastes like dry cardboard. Next.

Training… Not nearly enough. I’m walking and getting my steps in, but I think I’ve been able to run twice this month. It’s been too icy to run outside and I haven’t been able to break away from work long enough to get to the gym. This is what I get for making fun of the gym being full of resolution worker-outers.

Loving… Is it wrong if I say I love Alexa? I love our dots. I love telling Alexa to add things to the grocery list, to play my favorite playlists while I’m cooking, to do weight and measurement conversions, and to play ocean sounds when we’re all trying to go to sleep. Nothing puts me and the little man out like ocean sounds!
