October is my favorite month out of the year. Yes, I am that basic. But I swoon for all things leaves, pumpkins, boots, vests, cool air, warm firepit, and hot mulled cider. But I’m not touching a pumpkin spice latte. Not when there’s salted caramel hot chocolate in the world. Priorities.

We just celebrated two months for Baby Bean, and that’s the one bittersweet thing about going into October. I have to go back to work at the end of the month, which means our little man is going to daycare. I’ve learned through these two months at home with him that I would be horrible as a stay at home mom. The house would be ripped apart from top to bottom and Amazon would own even more of my soul than it does already. But still, a piece of my soul is dying knowing that I’m going to have to give up, at least during the weekdays, the long morning snuggles and seemingly endless hours watching my son blink and stare in awe and amazement at the world around him, from staring at his own little hands to being fascinated with the ceiling fan.

I hate the idea of having someone else sharing in these moments and teaching my child, but at the same time, I know that it’s in his best interest to have a breadth and depth of experiences, and in the best interests of my relationship with him to focus on the quality of time spent, not the quantity. This month, I get to figure out how I want to spend those quality moments with him, and how to squeeze the most out of every minute.

In the meantime, here’s what’s been going on…


Cooking… It’s been a bit of a rut around here. Burgers, grilled cheese and tomato soup, grilled salmon and rice, spaghetti – anything easy that I can make in under 30 minutes. I don’t get to cook all that much during the day with little man needing as much attention as he does, unless he’s napping, and that’s too unpredictable to get a cooking schedule together. I do a fair bit of meal prep and baking on the weekends, though, so there’s that! I’m hoping to work my way through some more fun fall recipes, like my mulled cider, cider donuts, and pumpkin soup!

Building… A few different projects for little man’s room, final touches for the mudroom, and a few things for the library. Scott put the baseboard back into the mudroom and we just have to caulk and paint it for that room to be done. I’m participating in the One Room Challenge this month to take you through what we’re doing for the nursery. And we’ll hit the library step by step after that. We’ll also, hopefully, be finally tackling the fireplace in the media room. We’d love to get that done before it’s time to fire it up!

Exploring… We’re working on getting little man used to getting out and about with us. So far, he’s been on plenty of car rides, visited Target and the grocery store, been into Starbucks, and lunched out with me and one of my friends who is currently in grad school and who gives me some awesome mom mentorship. We’re looking to get him out on nature walks, at least where we can take his stroller, because he absolutely loves trees. He’s fascinated by them.

Reading… Ha. Aha. Ahar har de har. Hee. I wish I had the energy. I’m either playing with my two month old or trying to get chores done when he sleeps, because if I try to sit down and do anything quiet like reading when he sleeps, I’m dozing off, too. Still, I’m adding this category back in because it’s a goal. I used to have a good schedule, alternating between professional and just for fun reading, and I’d love to ease back into it. Maybe Audible while I run is the answer. Or I could put a positive spin on this and see how many books I can read to the aforementioned two month old!

Training… Adding this category back to the menu, because I’ve been easing back into running this past month. I’m slow, slower than molasses, but I’m out and doing it. I’m going easy because I’m still carrying about an extra 20 pounds from pregnancy and I don’t want to impact my milk production, but I also know I have a physical fitness test I have to pass in the spring. That means running is a must, and those extra 20 pounds and then some have to be gone. No pressure. Gawd.

Loving… Honestly? Being an older parent. I just finished my 39th trip around the sun and while that seems like a vast separation of time between me and my baby, there are a lot of benefits. FOMO isn’t much of an issue. I have grand ambitions and things I want to do, but at the same time, I packed a lot of adventures into my 39 years. I also got the bar and dance club scene way out of my system in my 20s. I’m living in Ben Rector’s song Crazy and I’m perfectly okay with it. My heart is full.
